The piano lounge at Statlers originally sprang to life in a small, second-story venue on Church Street. An intimate space with barely enough seating for the passionate group of neighbourhood regulars, all of whom had one thing in common: the desire for a room on the Church Street strip where one could enjoy a beverage, live music, and at the same time hold a quiet conversation with friends.

The room developed a following, supported by the regular weekly appearances by vocalist Julie Michels and her musical partner-in-crime, Kevin Barrett. Together, the two explored the music they most enjoyed, and expanded their repertoire to include songs most requested by fans of the room. A "Live At Statlers" recording cemented Julie’s presence, and endeared the team not only to the regulars, but to a broader community, curious to discover this heretofore unknown venue in the gay village.
In 2007 the business changed hands and a larger location was sought to meet the growing needs of the showroom. Fortunately for fans, the team at LUB was shopping for a way to extend their business, and an arrangement was struck that enabled Statlers to move into a more accessible space with room to grow. The piano, the musicians, and the regulars moved up the street to the present home of Statlers, and the next chapter began.

As of fall 2008, business at Statlers is ever growing, and the second floor jewel box of a room is becoming a legitimate cabaret. The addition of the cabaret room will only enhance the on-going performances by Julie & Kevin, and other Statlers regulars. The beloved open-mic hosted by Anne-Marie Leonard, along with performance initiatives such as the wonderful Curtains Down series hosted by Jenni Burke and Michael Barber in the Piano Lounge ensure that more patrons than ever are able to enjoy a beverage, live music, and a conversation with friends on the Church Street strip.
